Seamless Technology Integration at Munich Airport's New Terminal
Ergonomic Solutions played a pivotal role in the successful integration of technology at Munich Airport's new satellite terminal. This project significantly enhanced the airport's retail operations through the installation of SpacePole products.
Boosting Retail Operations with SpacePole Products
Munich Airport, Germany's second-largest airport, opened a new satellite terminal to increase capacity for Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners. Eurotrade, a subsidiary of Flughafen München GmbH (FMG), managed approximately 65% of the airport’s retail sites, which expanded to 80 outlets with the new terminal. Eurotrade's unique approach involved employing staff at these outlets, including duty-free stores, boutiques, news-stands, and jewelry shops, as franchise operations on behalf of retailers. This accounted for 1,100 personnel, including the management team and logistics support.
Eurotrade's Innovative Approach to Retail Management
Eurotrade decided to upgrade its POS systems in preparation for the new satellite terminal. This upgrade included the installation of new H5000 Verifone payment terminals and a change in the color of the POS hardware from grey to black. Consequently, the technology mounting solutions also needed to be updated.

Custom Solutions for International Airport Retail Challenges
One significant challenge was the payment transaction process, which required a signature pad for passengers to declare their country of origin. Historically, these signature pads were desk-mounted and often damaged by heavy duty-free purchases. Ergonomic Solutions designed a prototype that mounted the pad on a pole with a specially designed armrest, preventing damage and improving usability.
Prototyping Success: Meeting Eurotrade's Unique Requirements
The tender also required various mounting configurations to suit existing and new furniture for POS and payment systems. Eurotrade needed solutions that could be traditionally screwed to the furniture and affixed to high-end materials like marble. Ergonomic Solutions' dedicated customer support team designed and supplied production-standard prototype armrests and configurations, including different desk mounts, within a week, even over the Christmas holidays. These prototypes fully met Eurotrade's requirements, a feat not achieved by competitors.
