Self-checkout at Alnatura

 

Alnatura, a renowned German chain of organic food supermarkets with its commitment to sustainability and organic products, sought to enhance the shopping experience.

The goal was to provide a quick and efficient checkout process without incurring significant cost or environmental impact.

The Solution: Customised SpacePole SCO Kiosk

Ergonomic Solutions delivered a bespoke version of the SpacePole Self-checkout (SCO) kiosk tailored specifically to Alnatura’s needs. Key customisations included:

Brand Colours: The kiosks were customised to match Alnatura’s brand colours, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing store environment.

Existing POS Hardware: The kiosks were designed to integrate seamlessly with Alnatura’s existing point-of-sale hardware, such as table scanners, scales, POS screens, printers and payment devices. The Peripheral arm was also extended to accommodate larger screens in the future. This approach not only preserved resources but also aligned with Alnatura’s commitment to sustainability.

Enhanced Accessibility: The horizontal scanner was raised to accommodate wheelchair access, ensuring a more inclusive and user-friendly experience for all customers. The custom side-mounted printer setup was also to improve the kiosks accessibility.

Maintenance and Upgrade Efficiency

To ensure minimal downtime and continued operational efficiency, the self-checkout kiosks were designed with a quick release backplate and front cover system. This feature facilitated easy maintenance and upgrades. The same installation team responsible for the store counters was trained to use and maintain the kiosks, streamlining the process and ensuring consistency across all installations.

Proof of concept and test stage

The initial phase of the rollout began with the installation of two self-checkout kiosks at the Alnatura store in Mannheim. The success of this pilot led to the expansion of eight more Alnatura stores to test self-checkout.
